Know Your Shape

Rarely do people have a perfectly proportioned body. Sometimes the upper part might be bigger than the bottom part, sometimes it may be the other way around. Some people are curvy, while others may have a straight body.

Any clothing style will look different on different body frames. The fundamental behind the identification and creation of the clothing style lies in the complete analysis and understanding of your body frame. The clothing style, hence, selected will fit out the best and also suit you the most.

Biologically, the body type of a person is a combination of muscles, bones, structures and genetics that remain pretty constant throughout the life. The measurement of the body may keep changing but the fundamental body shape does not. Keep this key point in mind and select the dress designs that will radiate the best of you.

Every body-type has something to flaunt and highlight. The same body frame may also have something to hide. You should, therefore, concentrate more on the positive aspects of your body and focus on the ways to hide those minor body flaws. Select the body- part that you like to show -off and design an outfit around it and flaunt your body with confidence, grace and gaiety.

The Key Rule is - Wear clothes that underline your qualities and strike out your grey areas.

Let's look at some of the most popular horizontal body shapes that we all may fit into...

1. The Hourglass, meaning a curvy body with a smaller waist
2. The Apple, with more weight on the upper part of the body
3. The Pear, with more weight around hips and thighs and
4. The Column/Banana, wherein the bust, waist and hips are pretty much of the same size

You can see in the collage above that even the most beautiful and desirable celebrities are a part of one of these four shapes. Anushka Sharma and Kareena have fairly straight constitutions, Priyanka Chopra has wonderful curves, Katrina Kaif and Sonam Kapoor have larger bottoms compared to their busts and Deepika Padukone has an almost Hourglass figure.

Apparently, the highest percentage of women in India are Pear-shaped, followed by Columns, Apples and lastly, the Hourglasses. There are other shapes as well like Voluptous, Muscular, Guitar, Oval, Spoon, Bell, etc. But the above four are by far the most popular ones and thus we'll discuss them..

1. Pear Shape

You know you're a Pear when you have a large bottom half and a smaller top half. Your hips are about 10 inches more than your waist, but same is not the case with your bust length. Thus, you are bottom-heavy, have thicker thighs and you tend to gain weight first at these bottom areas.

On the contrary, you have a fabulous upper body, neck and petite shoulders which are the best areas for you to flaunt! Highlight your shoulders, neck and bust by experimenting with sleeves and neck patterns. Shrugs and short jackets will add volume to your upper half. Use smoother fabrics below the waistline, darker colors for skirts and pants, slightly tapering trousers and striking accessories on the top.. What else? Lets your clothes do the talking!!

2. Column Shape

You know you're a Column when the measurements of your bust, waist and hips do not vary to a great extent. You lack curves and that’s the reason you appear rather straight and column-like. You tend to gain weight overall and that does not affect your figure too much, unless it starts making you look tom-boyish.

The best part about your figure is that you can carry almost anything without having to worry that it may make you look fatter or thinner. You can add volume wherever you want and hide it whenever you wish to. Color block your outfit to distinguish upper and lower body. Make belts an important part of your wardrobe. Avoid vertical stripes & add shape to your figure.. Ta da..!! Your're ready to rock the show..

3. Apple Shape

You know you're an Apple when you have a large upper half and a smaller lower half. Your bust line is about 10 inches more than your waist, but same proportion is not shared by your hips and waist.  Thus, you appear top-heavy, have larger busts and you tend to gain weight first on your shoulders and chest.

What’s best about your shape are your hips and slender legs. Sway away the attention from your heavy upper body by using striking colors on the bottom, horizontal stipes, A-line skirts, wider trousers in the lower half. Also, make your upper half appear slimmer by using open necklines, vertical stripes, fluid drapes smooth in texture.

Your legs are made to carry almost any kind of footwear – be it ballerinas, stilettoes or kitten heels. Mama mia.. You’re all set and done!!

4. Hourglass Shape

You know you're an Hourglass when your both halves are in absolute proportion. Your bust line and hips are about 6-10 inches more than your waist and thus, you carry the rarest and most appealing body shape a woman can have! Having a perfect 36-24-36 figure is like one in a lakh probability, but close to 36-26-36 or 34-26-34 is what can qualify today. We’re talking of a balanced body and you have it!

Your body is ideal, but you must learn highlight your curves and not hide them. Like columns, you can carry almost any outfit, but you do not need to volumnise or de-volumnise any part of your figure. Pencil skirts, sleek bottoms, sweetheart and V-necks, one-button jackets and peep toes among other things will bring out the best in you. Show the world you're an Hourglass and nothing else needs to be done!
